Taxi from Cabo Airport (SJD): What It Costs, and Why Most Groups Book a Private Transfer Instead
A taxi from Los Cabos airport does not work like a taxi at home. There is no meter. You cannot flag one at the curb. The price is set by which zone your hotel is in, you pay at a window before you see the car, and the window prefers cash.
We run private transfers, so you know where we stand. We also get asked about taxis every week by people who did not book with us, and most of what they were told inside the terminal was wrong. This page is the version we give them: how the stand works, what it costs in 2026, when a taxi is the sensible choice, and what you are paying for if you book a private car instead.
Short version: for one or two people going to San José, take the taxi. For a family going to Cabo San Lucas, the taxi costs about the same as a private car and you still stand in line.
Cabo airport taxi vs private transfer vs shared shuttle: same price, very different arrival
Rates below are 2026 figures. Taxi ranges come from the authorized stand and are confirmed by independent guides published in March and September 2026. Private rates are ours, published on this site. Shared rates are what the main shared-van operators charge per seat.

Private rates are cash rates: pay the driver in USD when you arrive and there is no tax. Paying by card online adds 16% at checkout.
At four people to Cabo San Lucas the three options cost 100 to 115 USD. The difference is not the price. It is whether someone is waiting for you.
How the SJD airport taxi stand works (and where the line forms)
You clear customs in Terminal 2 and walk into a long hall lined with desks. The people at those desks will offer to call you a cab, check your reservation, or give you a free ride to your resort. They sell timeshare. Some of them are very good at it. The free ride ends at a sales presentation that runs two to four hours.
Keep walking. The taxi stand is outside the building.
Past the sliding doors, look left and right for a kiosk marked "Taxis" or "Transportación Terrestre". Tell the attendant the name of your hotel. They quote the flat rate for that zone, you pay, they hand you a printed ticket, and a dispatcher walks you to the next car in line. You do not pick the car. Two people pay the same as one.
Bring cash. The kiosks display card logos, and sometimes the terminal works. Every guide written in 2026 says the same thing: have dollars or pesos on you, because the line does not wait while the machine reboots.
City taxis from Cabo San Lucas or San José are not allowed to pick up at the airport. Neither is Uber, and the National Guard enforces that at the curb. The airport fleet is a federal concession; those are the only cars that can take you from the terminal.
The airport taxi is safe. The fleet is regulated, the drivers are licensed, the rate is printed on your ticket. What it is not is fast, predictable, or bookable.
Taxi from Cabo airport to Cabo San Lucas, San José and the Corridor: 2026 prices next to ours
Per vehicle, one way, at the authorized stand:
- SJD taxi to the San José del Cabo hotel zone and downtown: 65 to 85 USD
- Tourist Corridor (Palmilla, Chileno, Cabo Real, Cabo del Sol): 75 to 95 USD
- Cabo San Lucas taxi from the airport (downtown, marina, Médano): 90 to 115 USD
- Pacific side (Pedregal, Diamante, Quivira, Rancho San Lucas) and beyond: higher, ask at the stand
The stand does not publish its rate card online, and the zone lines do not always match the hotel's marketing. If your resort sits at the edge of a zone, ask for the price before you pay.
When the airport taxi is the right call
- You are alone or a couple with a bag each, staying in San José del Cabo or near the airport. The ride is 10 to 15 minutes and 65 to 85 USD is hard to beat for a car you did not have to plan.
- You landed without a reservation and want to be gone in twenty minutes.
- Your plans changed on the plane and you no longer know where you are going.
None of that is a knock on the taxi. It exists for exactly those cases.
Private transfer from Los Cabos airport: what 110 USD buys that a taxi does not
At four people to Cabo San Lucas, private costs within a few dollars of the taxi. So the question is what the money buys. This is the list, and every item on it is something that goes wrong at SJD on a normal day:
No line. We track your flight number. When you walk out the doors the car is already there. If you land at 3 PM with two other planes, the taxi line is 15 to 20 minutes in the sun with your bags.
No cash surprise. Your rate is fixed when you book and printed on your voucher. Nobody asks for "airport tax" at the hotel gate. Pay the driver in cash on arrival and you skip the 16% tax; pay online if you prefer a card.
The car you booked. A Suburban for five with luggage is what pulls up. At the kiosk you get whatever is next: sometimes a Suburban, sometimes a sedan with a small trunk.
A place to walk to. After customs, cross the hall, go out the doors, cross the yellow stripes toward the Island Bar. Under Canopy 3 there is a hostess holding an "ALL WAYS CABO CHECKPOINT" sign. That is the whole set of instructions.
A child seat that is actually there. On request, no charge. Airport taxis do not carry them.
Straight to your door. No stops. 40 to 50 minutes to Cabo San Lucas, 20 to 35 to the Corridor, 10 to 15 to San José.

How to check a Cabo airport transfer company before you pay, and how we check out
"Private transfer" on a website guarantees nothing. Travelers post about pre-booked cars that showed up an hour late, or never, and then paid 85 USD for a taxi anyway. One well-known trap is the 25 USD "private SUV" that turns out to be a shared van with ten stops, or a driver who holds the luggage until you pay a fee that was never mentioned.
Before you book with anyone, including us, look for five things:
- Rates published on the site, by zone and by vehicle, before you enter a card number.
- A named meeting point at SJD. "Our driver will find you" is not a meeting point.
- Flight tracking, in writing, with no charge for delays.
- A phone or WhatsApp number that a person answers, and reviews you can read yourself on Google or TripAdvisor.
- Confirmation that the company is licensed to pick up at the airport. That is what gets a car past the terminal curb and past hotel security, which has been turning unauthorized drivers around since spring 2026.
